Hillside Catholic Academy Travels Around the World in Eighty Minutes”

Hillside Catholic Academy eagerly celebrated International Day. The students worked hard to learn and teach others about different cultures through song, dance, prayer, and dramatizations.

1st Grade opened the show with a beautiful rendition of the Spanish prayer “Ave María.”

In honor of Saint  Francis of Assisi and, World Animal Day the Pre K and Kindergarten sang and danced in costume to celebrate the animals of the world.

Grade 8  taught a lesson in  geography with a song about the Spanish speaking countries of the world and their capitals.

Grades 2 and 3  told the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The student  actors and storytellers reenacted the miracle that spread Catholicism throughout Mexico.

Grades 4 and 5  transported the audience to Spain during Holy Weekor “Semana Santa.” They marched around the auditorium carrying the “pasos” or floats they had built.

Grades 6 and 7  energized the crowd with amazing music, song and dance from Africa, Peru, and Cuba.

“The students were really excited about  today. Many of them chose to give up recess to prepare for the assembly.”  stated Ms. Lindsey Paz who was responsible for putting the day together.  “The students  really wanted to show the school what they had learned and how hard they had been working. Every student was involved and did a fantastic job!” Ms. Paz is the school’s World Language teacher.

The students enjoyed every aspect of the day. “It was fun walking around in the procession,” said 4th Grade student  Monica Coelho.  “I really liked  the acts they were so cool.”

Tatyanna Citelli of the 5th Grade agreed. “I learned so much about all the different countries and their customs.  This is something I will never forget.

Ms. Paz believes that day was an important for another reason. .   “It is so important to learn about other cultures because it promotes diversity and global equality.”  That she says is all part of the school’s Mission Statement.
